Buying a second-hand fireplace or stove?

A high-quality fireplace or stove can last for years if it’s well maintained. That’s why many people wonder if it’s worthwhile to take over an existing fireplace or stove from someone else. The purchase price may be lower, but what about fuel costs? Or perhaps your current appliance no longer fits your interior and you’d like to buy a new one. Curious about what you can do with your old fireplace or stove? You’ll find it all in this blog post.

Is a second-hand fireplace or stove worth it?

As a buyer of a second-hand fireplace or stove from a private seller, you have little certainty about the quality of the appliance. The installation may look fine, but some parts could already be due for replacement. Perhaps the seller is honest and informs you of defects - but then you’ll need to decide whether you’d really save money compared to buying a new installation. Repairs cost money too.

If you’ve fallen for that one second-hand fireplace that needs a bit of work, you can always look for spare parts. At JDB Fireplaces and interiors, we offer various brands. If we’re a distributor of your brand, we can order replacement parts. There’s a good chance we can still get components for older models.

A new fireplace or stove vs. a second-hand one

Buying a new fireplace or stove is a serious investment. Many people therefore find a second-hand appliance attractive. In the short term it may seem cheaper, but in practice that’s often not the case. The new generation of fireplaces and stoves are more energy-efficient and deliver better performance. If you buy a charming old wood-burning fireplace, for instance, it won’t meet today’s standards. In fact, 80% of pollution comes from wood stoves older than 15 years.

A new wood stove gives you more control over airflow, optimizes the combustion process, and achieves a higher efficiency rate - all of which means virtually no pollution. Want to read more about efficiency? Take a look here.

Combustion is therefore much more efficient, meaning you need less fuel. This applies to both wood and gas fireplaces or stoves. While a new installation may be more expensive upfront, you’ll save on fuel and maintenance costs in the long run. In addition, new gas fireplaces are already adapted for the transition from lean to rich gas.

With a new fireplace, there are more integration possibilities in your home. Installing a built-in fireplace is also easier with a new appliance.

Prefer a new fireplace?

When you purchase a new appliance from us, we’ll take your old fireplace or stove away free of charge—so you don’t have to worry about it. Some customers sell their old appliance and use the remaining value to finance a new one. We do not buy back old units ourselves.

If you buy a second-hand fireplace or stove, you won’t have a warranty. It’s also possible we’re not a distributor for your model. In that case, for maintenance and repairs, you’ll need to contact the brand’s official distributor. Spare parts are not always guaranteed to be available.
