Which fireplaces provide heat?

Fireplaces come in many shapes and sizes. Depending on the type of fuel, you’ll experience a different kind of warmth. In principle, every stove or fireplace can provide heat - but did you know that some fireplaces offer heat as an optional feature? Take the electric fireplace, for example. These appliances are perfect for creating atmosphere. Curious how these ambience fireplaces work?

Fireplaces that produce heat

The type of fuel you choose has a big impact on the amount of heat your fireplace will produce. A stove that runs on wood, gas, or bioethanol always creates a tangible feeling of warmth. The output of your stove determines the temperature in the room: a larger unit will automatically produce more heat. For a well-insulated home, it’s often better to go for a smaller installation. Too much output can reduce the amount of oxygen in the room. Curious how many kilowatts you actually need?

What is a decorative fireplace?

There are different types of ambience fireplaces. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at the electric ambience fireplace. While an electric fireplace can give off heat, that isn’t its main purpose. Its primary role is to create atmosphere in your interior. If your main heating is already perfectly in place, you can simply keep using it. With an electric fireplace, you get to enjoy the look and feel of a cozy fire - without the extra heat.

How does an electric ambience fireplace work?

You can place an electric decorative fireplace in any room. Dreaming of a fireplace in your bedroom? No problem! With these appliances, it’s possible. All you need is a power outlet - no chimney or flue required. Just keep in mind the level of heat the unit may produce. Some models even allow you to switch off the heating module entirely.

If you do use the heating function, the room temperature will never rise as much as with a fireplace that burns another type of fuel. As mentioned earlier, these appliances are mainly designed to create atmosphere, not to serve as the primary heating system. The heat they provide is supplementary. Electric fireplaces can emit two types of heat: convection heat and radiant heat. Below, we’ll explain both options in more detail.

Electric ambience fireplace with convection heat

Electric fireplaces with convection heat are the most common type. In short, the heat transfer happens through the air. Cold air is warmed as it passes by a heating module. You can compare it to an air conditioner - except instead of blowing out cold air, it blows warm air into the room. After a while, all the air in the space is evenly warmed.

Electric ambience fireplace with radiant heat

An electric decorative fireplace can also emit radiant heat. These appliances do not warm the air directly; instead, they radiate heat themselves. Fireplaces with radiant heat continue to release warmth until they have completely cooled down. This means the heat lingers longer, even after you’ve switched the appliance off.

Electric ambience fireplace without heat

There are also electric fireplaces without a heating element. These are often installed in newly built homes where the main heating system is already perfectly in place. They are also ideal for smaller rooms. This way, you can enjoy the look of a fire without the space becoming too warm.
